A lethal effect associated with polymorphism of the NOR-bearing chromosomes in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Genet. Mol. Biol.

Cytogenetic analysis of a rainbow trout stock showed that the nucleolar organizing regions were located subterminally on the long arm of a submetacentric chromosome pair and occurred as a single chromosomal segment (phenotype N1) or as two chromosomal segments separated by a short euchromatic segment (phenotype N2). Cytogenetic analysis also showed that there were N1N1 and N1N2 individuals but no N2N2 individuals. Analysis of the different includedphenotypes incluted that the population was not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (chi² = 19.333; p < 0.01), and that a higher frequency of individuals had the N1N2 phenotype. The rainbow trout is a salmonid fish that occasionally exhibits broodstocks with biannual spawning behavior, a phenomenon known as a double annual reproductive cycle (DARC). Spawning time quantitative trait loci (SPT-QTLs) affect the time of the year that female rainbow trout spawn and may influence expression of the DARC trait. In this study, microsatellite markers linked and unlinked to SPT-QTLs were genotyped to investigate the underlying genetics of this trait. Combined effects of water quality and stocking density on welfare and growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer

An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). Comparison of brown trout (Salmo trutta) reared in fresh water and sea water to freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) .1. Growth and nitrogen balance ArchiMer

Brown trout and rainbow trout (average weight 100 g) were reared in fresh water at 12 degrees C under the same conditions before transfer of brown trout to sea water, in order to compare nitrogen utilisation in the two species. Apparent protein digestibility (ADC), nitrogen (ammonia and urea) excretion, protein productive value (PPV) and actual observed nitro en mass balance were determined. Comparison of fatty acid content of fresh and frozen fillets of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Walbaum BABT

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the percentage content of fatty acids (FA) of 54 rainbow trout fresh and frozen fillets. Frozen fillets were stored at -15ºC for 45 and 90 days. Saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA), omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids were determined by gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry. The results indicated that during frozen storage, SFA and MUFA content increased by 32.63 and 9.25%, respectively, while PUFA content decreased by 25.3%, n-6 by 12.4% and n-3 by 32.55%. Densité d'élevage chez la truite arc-en-ciel (Onchorynchus mykiss W.). Conséquences sur la qualité de la chair et l'état apparent ArchiMer

A triploid strain of rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) was reared in two experiments testing density effect on growth and flesh quality. Physiological index and corporal condition were also considered. Environmental  parameters were maintained identical between densities. Two fold 20, 50 and 80 Kg m·3 stocking densities were reared at 1.3% daily ration. No differences were found in fish growth neither in fish quality. A second experience compared two densities (50 and 110 kg m-3 ) and oxygen supplementation. Fish were fed ad libitum. Weight gain diminished at higher densities and oxygen supplementation had a favourable effect on fish growth. No differences were found in flesh quality parameters tested.

Our objective was to analyse the hepatic transcriptomes of juvenile rainbow trout fed with a plant-based diet. We focused our analysis on the total replacement of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) by a 100% plant-based diet (0% FM, 0% FO). We analysed the postprandial hepatic transcriptomes of rainbow trout fed the two diets 8 h after feeding. Six total hepatic RNAs from each dietary group were hybridised against a trout cDNA microarray (9K). Discrimination of bile acids by the rainbow trout olfactory system: Evidence as potential pheromone Biol. Res.

Electro-olfactogram recording was used to determine whether the olfactory epithelium of adult rainbow trout is specifically sensitive to bile acids, some of which have been hypothesized to function as pheromones. Of 38 bile acids that had been pre-screened for olfactory activity, 6 were selected. The rainbow trout-specific bile acids, taurocholic acid (TCA), and taurolithocholic acid 3-sulfate (TLS) were the most potent compounds tested. TLS had a distinctive dose-response curve. Cross-adaptation experiments demonstrated that sensitivity to bile acids is attributable to at least 3 independent classes of olfactory receptor sites. The effect of autoclaving on the nutrients' apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), digestible protein and energy of pea seed meal (P. sativum) fed to Rainbow trout (O. mykiss) was examined. Two samples of the pea meal were autoclaved at 121°C and 1.1 atm for 5 min (5'APM) or 15 min (15'APM), respectively. A third sample, used as control, was not treated (RPM). Effects of rapeseed meal-glucosinolates on thyroid metabolism and feed utilization in rainbow trout ArchiMer

Two rapeseed meals (RM1 and RM2), containing glucosinolates at a concentration of 26 and 40 mumol/g, respectively, were incorporated at increasing levels (10, 20, and 30% for RM1 and 30 and 50% for RM2) in diets of juvenile rainbow trout. Disturbances in the thyroid axis appeared after 14 days of feeding (with a dietary incorporation level of 10%). The dietary supplementation with T-3 or iodine induced an increase in plasma T-3 levels, compared to that in fish fed the RM diets, and reduced the deleterious effect of RM on growth. Replacement of dietary fish oil by a blend of vegetable oils for more than a year does not affect growth, hepatic lipogenesis and tissue lipid uptake in rainbow trout and European seabass. However, this replacement decreases plasma cholesterol level in both species and LDL amount in rainbow trout. Such replacement does not affect muscle lipid content of fish but modifies fatty acid composition of fish flesh which reflects in most part that of dietary lipid source. Increasing dietary lipid level inhibits hepatic lipogenesis but does not modify tissue lipid uptake in seabass and in two trout lines selected for muscle lipid level. Little is known about the genetic basis of residual feed intake (RFI) variation in fish, since this trait is highly sensitive to environmental influences, and feed intake of individuals is difficult to measure accurately. The purpose of this work was (i) to assess the genetic variability of RFI estimated by an X-ray technique and (ii) to develop predictive criteria for RFI. Two predictive criteria were tested: loss of body weight during feed deprivation and compensatory growth during re-feeding. Ten heterozygous rainbow trout clones were used. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a rate-limiting enzyme in hepatic gluconeogenesis and therefore plays a central role in glucose homeostasis. The aim of this study was to analyse the nutritional regulation of PEPCK gene expression in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which are known to use dietary carbohydrates poorly. A full-length hepatic PEPCK cDNA (2637 base pairs with one open reading frame putatively encoding a 635-residue protein) was cloned and found to be highly homologous to mammalian PEPCKs. How to assess fin damage in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss? ArchiMer

Fin condition was examined in 100-500 g hatchery-reared rainbow trout sampled in a large range of environmental conditions of an experimental farm. A method that is simple to use, requires little training, and does not need costly sophisticated equipment or reference to a model is proposed to assess fin erosion (defined as a decrease in size and profile alteration of fins). A procedure to reliably measure the length of the longest ray present in two selected fins (dorsal and pectoral) is described. Fin general profile is assessed using five levels of erosion based on the precise rank of intact or eroded rays to limit subjective bias. The suitability of the two descriptors of fin erosion under laboratory, farm or field conditions is discussed.

Lack of significant long-term effect of dietary carbohydrates on hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase expression in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer

Hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) plays an important role in glucose metabolism because it catalyzes the release of glucose to the circulatory system in the processes of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. The present study was initiated to analyze the regulation of hepatic G6Pase expression by dietary carbohydrates in rainbow trout. The first step in our study was the identification of a partial G6Pase cDNA in rainbow trout that was highly homologous to that of mammals. Hepatic G6Pase activities and mRNA levels were measured in trout fed one of the experimental diets, with or without carbohydrates.
