In salmonid species, nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) have frequently been found on a single chromosome pair. However, some other, smaller yet active NORs have also been described. In the present study, NORs were found to be located in different positions on the chromosomes of 12 rainbow trout samples (11 cultivated and one naturalized stocks). Three phenotypes were found: 1) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, in a subterminal position on the short arm (AA); 2) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, in a subterminal position on the long arm (BB); and 3) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, one in a subterminal position on the short arm, and the other in a subterminal position on the long arm (AB). Phenotype AA was... |

Background: Interleukin 8 is a chemokine that is produced by several types of cells, like macrophages and has chemotactic activity in particular on neutrophils, playing a key role during the inflammatory process. It has been demonstrated at the molecular level that this molecule is present and conserved in several vertebrate groups, pointing its importance. Analysis of the amino acid sequence of IL-8, projected from cDNA of Salmo salar, presents homology with the sequences of mammals, poultry and lamprey, indicating the presence of a homologous molecule in higher fish. However, there is no information at protein level, which allows characterizing the regulatory role of this molecule during the immune response in fish. Results: In this work, we designed and... |

An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m(-3), but at 120 kg m(-3) it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m(-3). Feed intake (FI) from day... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the percentage content of fatty acids (FA) of 54 rainbow trout fresh and frozen fillets. Frozen fillets were stored at -15ºC for 45 and 90 days. Saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA), omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids were determined by gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry. The results indicated that during frozen storage, SFA and MUFA content increased by 32.63 and 9.25%, respectively, while PUFA content decreased by 25.3%, n-6 by 12.4% and n-3 by 32.55%. These changes were more significant (P ≤ 0.05) during the first 45 d of storage. It was concluded that the frozen storage had a negative impact on meat quality of rainbow trout due to the reduction of PUFA,... |

A triploid strain of rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) was reared in two experiments testing density effect on growth and flesh quality. Physiological index and corporal condition were also considered. Environmental parameters were maintained identical between densities. Two fold 20, 50 and 80 Kg m·3 stocking densities were reared at 1.3% daily ration. No differences were found in fish growth neither in fish quality. A second experience compared two densities (50 and 110 kg m-3 ) and oxygen supplementation. Fish were fed ad libitum. Weight gain diminished at higher densities and oxygen supplementation had a favourable effect on fish growth. No differences were found in flesh quality parameters tested. |

Our objective was to analyse the hepatic transcriptomes of juvenile rainbow trout fed with a plant-based diet. We focused our analysis on the total replacement of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) by a 100% plant-based diet (0% FM, 0% FO). We analysed the postprandial hepatic transcriptomes of rainbow trout fed the two diets 8 h after feeding. Six total hepatic RNAs from each dietary group were hybridised against a trout cDNA microarray (9K). After treatment of the data respecting the standard MIAME (Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment) protocol, we found that 176 hepatic genes were differentially expressed between fish fed the two diets: 96 and 80 were over-expressed and under-expressed, respectively, in trout fed the plant-based diet. A... |

The effect of autoclaving on the nutrients' apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), digestible protein and energy of pea seed meal (P. sativum) fed to Rainbow trout (O. mykiss) was examined. Two samples of the pea meal were autoclaved at 121°C and 1.1 atm for 5 min (5'APM) or 15 min (15'APM), respectively. A third sample, used as control, was not treated (RPM). One reference diet (Basal diet) and 3 experimental diets were elaborated and labelled based on autoclaving time applied to the ingredient (RPM, 5'APM and 15'APM). The four diets were assigned using a completely randomised design, with each treatment having three replicates. 12 tanks were stocked each with 15 trouts with an average weight of 235 ± 10.4 g. Faeces were collected over a 7-day period... |

The present study investigated the effects of propolis and vitamin E supplementation in diets of juvenil rainbow trout subjected to two different flow rates with or without flow stress (0.9 and 2.1 l/min, respectively) on final weigth (FW), condition factor (CF), feed conservation ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and vitamin A, C and E concentrations and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in serum as well as plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The experimental groups were as follows: group C was fed a basal diet, group P10 was fed a basal diet supplemented with 10 g propolis/kg, group P30 was fed a basal diet supplemented with 30 g propolis/kg, group E60 was fed a basal diet supplemented with 60 mg vitamin E/kg. CF and PER were not different... |

Two rapeseed meals (RM1 and RM2), containing glucosinolates at a concentration of 26 and 40 mumol/g, respectively, were incorporated at increasing levels (10, 20, and 30% for RM1 and 30 and 50% for RM2) in diets of juvenile rainbow trout. Disturbances in the thyroid axis appeared after 14 days of feeding (with a dietary incorporation level of 10%). The dietary supplementation with T-3 or iodine induced an increase in plasma T-3 levels, compared to that in fish fed the RM diets, and reduced the deleterious effect of RM on growth. When trout were reared in seawater, there was also a slight increase in thyroid hormone levels. TSH treatment had no effect on the thyroid hormone plasma levels. The incorporation of 30% of RM1, which induced a lower dietary... |

This Study was carried out at the Salmoniculture Experimental Station "Dr. Ascanio de Faria", in Campos do Jordão, São Paulo. Brazil. The aim was to compared the hematology of triploid and diploid rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792, by sex and gonadal maturation stages. Blood was obtained from 144 individuais for determinati-ons of: haemoglobin rate (Hb), haematocrit (Ht), erythrocyte count (Er), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MHC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and differential leucocyte counts. The ploid was determinated by measuring the erythrocyte major axis, in fresh and stainncd smears. Triploid rainbow trout had a large eiythrocyte diameter, mean erythrocyte volume and mean haemoglobin... |

Fin condition was examined in 100-500 g hatchery-reared rainbow trout sampled in a large range of environmental conditions of an experimental farm. A method that is simple to use, requires little training, and does not need costly sophisticated equipment or reference to a model is proposed to assess fin erosion (defined as a decrease in size and profile alteration of fins). A procedure to reliably measure the length of the longest ray present in two selected fins (dorsal and pectoral) is described. Fin general profile is assessed using five levels of erosion based on the precise rank of intact or eroded rays to limit subjective bias. The suitability of the two descriptors of fin erosion under laboratory, farm or field conditions is discussed. |
